Ponette's Relationship with Her Father

As an adult, it is expected that you know all the answers. However, sometimes you don't. At times you are the one seeking the explanations to a questions like "What did my mother have to die?" A death in the family will effect everybody. This is especially true if that death is a parent. It's hard to understand death. Sometimes the best way to deal with death is by not.

Ignoring the issue is how the father deals with his wife's death in Ponette (1996). His solution for coping is hard for his daughter Ponette to understand where her mother is. The four-year old does not understand death and the confusions from her cousins, aunt, and friends perplex her even more. Her need for solace is where the father figure should appear; however in her time of need he leaves her. The relationship between Ponette and her father is fascinating because it lacks what American's perceive as "normal" in a family tie.
