Poverty In America

As time marches toward a new millennium, America prepares for many critical issues dawning upon the horizon. A misconception that many people living both in America and outside the country have about the United States is that everyone living here is wealthy. Many believe that everyone drives fast cars and lives in large homes as often portrayed in Hollywood movies. What society is unaware of is that the poverty rate is extremely high in the United States and is likely to rise due to the rapidly growing population. More children, as a percentage, live in poverty in America then in any other Western European country. The U.S. Census Bureau asserts that twenty-one percent or ten million of the children that reside in the United States are plagued with poverty. (Weinburg 1996 p.13)
