Power Of Context
While reading “Power of Context”, written by Malcolm Gladwell, I was impressed by his effort that he tried to persuade readers of influence of environment on human behavior, shown in each paragraph. As proving his argument with experimental evidences, which is difficult to argue because abstract, he seemed to device the successful strategy.
Most impressing thing was Malcolm showed true of Goetz’s murder in the last paragraph. Actually, I had believed that Goetz was affected by his poor background like his raging father before I read the last line. Goetz metaphorically spoke himself a rat in the corner right before murdering the youths. Eventually, in other words, the murder resulted from an immediate situation. It gave me same impression as the last scene of the movie “The Six Sense” which showed an unexpected end.
However, I felt the want of clear explanation for an experiment. Different from other experiments for which he cited famous institutes and professors, when describing basketball and quiz game experiments, he did not mentioned about who performed. He may lose reliance of the experiment. If the experiments were from his experience, he should have told about it for readers who might be doubtful like me. Furthermore, when suggesting readers to try the experiments in different ways, he did not inform specifically how we can do this. He seemed just to explain previous one again.
Nevertheless, it was great opportunity for me to consider about human’s behavior. In fact, it was first time to think about the immediate environment. I have not even heard about it. I recollected when I was in Korean military after reading “The Power of Context”. I had rarely used bad words by the time I joined the army. However, I remember I insulted soldiers below me. I could realize that I was also affected by the immediate situation with rough life and where war could occur. Like a guard in the prison study, it was not what I had used to be.
