Process Selection for sofa:

The manufacturing methods of the product combine the previously made selections on materials and design by processing and shaping the raw materials into parts to be assembled in the desired design.

The processes were chosen by elimination. First, we considered all the possible processes suitable for the chosen material. That is the material compatibility.   Then, according to the size and shape designed for the component in a particular material, we dismissed a few choices from the available processes. The remaining possibilities were reduced again when we considered the finished product and quality of the different parts. The final method was then ultimately chosen as the most cost-efficient of the lasting manufacturing processes in hand. Please, see appendix drawings for help to picture the different parts of the sofa.

The process selection begins with one of the main materials of our sofas:

1. Pine:

a) Material compatibility

The biggest advantage of natural organic materials apart from being generally very cheap and the tools used to shape them only consist of basic machining simplifying the selection process.

We first made a large selection based on common sense. In the shaping section, we could, at this early stage, dismiss the water-jet cutting process, as it is very slow, and the turning and boring processes as they machine shapes our sofa don’t require. Similarly, in the joining section, one could say that flexible adhesive is not an option since none of the sofa’s parts that are glued together should have any degree of liberty; only the telescopic rods would allow a...
