There were many changes that were quickly approaching the New World with the sight of Columbus in 1492. In fact, life in Europe would be forever changed with the discovery of a new, yet in some ways deadly land. While some effects were beneficient to both parties, some were devastating to the continents and their populations.
The New World gave crops such as tomatoes, maize, some varieties of beans, etc. to Europe. In exchange, the New World received the goods Europe had to offer. This massive change in harvest introduced many new foods that better health through variety and in turn, population growth.
However, with the arrival of the Europeans, the New World was once again touched by an outbreak of malaria, yellow fever, and smallpox. Although many of these native peoples had been immune before, generations of time between epidemics led to deficiency in benefits. As a result, more than 90% of the native population perished.
