I choose to watch the classic suspense/horror film ‘Psycho’ by Alfred Hitchcock. As most people know, Hitchcock is noted for being the ‘master of suspense’. According to Hitchcock, the viewer has to know more than the character to create suspense. After viewing and analyzing this film, I will explain how suspense is built and how it affects the viewer.
Suspense can be defined as the feeling of uncertainty and interest about the outcome of certain actions, most often referring to an audience's perceptions in a dramatic work. Suspense is the key detail Alfred Hitchcock put into his movies. Suspense is that feeling where your stomach starts churning, your palms start to sweat, and you are sitting on the edge of your seat. Building suspense is no easy task. All elements must be in sync with each other or else it will come out all wrong. The dialogue can't drag, the camera must play its part, the music has to be set to rise and fall at the appropriate situation. Hitchcock was the best at successfully accomplishing this technique.
There are many ways to add suspense to a movie. One good way to add suspense to a movie is the choice of music. Sound has the ability to make the hair on the back of your neck stand up whether it’s nails on a chalk board or your favorite song. Usually the music starts before the incident, so you know something big is about to happen. The instruments in the song are vital because an organ is used for more scary intense scenes due to the deep sound they make. Piano mixed with wind instruments make the suspenseful sounds you are used to hearing in Hitchcock films along with many other suspense films. Timing is another big part in building suspense. When someone is coming up the stairs they usually go up one by one by one. They always take their time to build suspense and put you on the edge of your seat.
