Overview of Personality Disorders

Some have called all this the “Awareness movement.” One cannot simply approve, condemn, or ignore it all, but it is difficult to evaluate. We can say, for better or worse, that a major social change is taking place.” (pg. 251 Levin)
Many Americans have been diagnosed with different psychological and mental illnesses. Everyday science is making breakthroughs in the discoveries of different disorders that plaque the people of the nation as a whole. There are many broad categories that disorders are placed in and grouped together, if they show some similar characteristics. Psychologists are learning many unique ways to alleviate the problems that occur from these disorders. One type of category that is rampant is personality disorders.
”Personality disorders is a group of disorders marked by persistent, inflexible, maladaptive patterns of thought and behavior that develop in adolescence or early adulthood and significantly impair an individual's ability to function.” (www.mherc.mb.ca/gloss.html) There are so many different types of disorders that fall under the umbrella of personality disorders. Some examples would include paranoid, schizoid, schizotypal, antisocial, borderline, histrionic, narcissistic, avoidant disorder.
Narcissistic behavioral disorder tends to fall under the dramatic-emotional personality disorder group. The people that are diagnosed with disorders like this are predisposed to be quite impulsive, spontaneous and risk takers. They also are inclined to become very dramatic and sometimes violent depending on the situations that they are a part of. In this paper we will discuss the origin of narcissism and the meaning behind the word. We will also apply narcissism to the concept of self-love and self object.
