Rebuttal For "V For Vendetta"
In the recently released film, V for Vendetta, there exist the recurrent themes of terrorism, propaganda, and brainwashing. The protagonist, V, is an icon of freedom and justice while the government is seen as an icon of suppression and fascism—much like the reviewer (Owen Jones) who believes the film is merely a shameful adaptation of the original comic book. Jones fails to recognize how all the themes and analogies that constantly appear in the movie tie in with today’s society and its views on freedom, morale, and negative political indoctrination.
While the reviewer claims that the poor and improper screenplay and script of the film was constantly battering him over the head with the “obvious,” it is quite apparent that he did not notice the juxtaposition of a fictitious setting and the real world, and the apparent similarities they shared. In the film there are a variety of contrasting themes that strongly tie in to today’s society, although the film is set in the year 2020, there is the constant (rather widespread) tug of war between good and evil. Such a connection may be relevant to the attacks that have occurred in today’s society, and the wars that have been slowly but surely arising. In any society, people are likely to revolt when they dislike a situation. Guy Fawkes, for example, revolted when he disliked the oppression King James I was implying, and V is most certainly revolting in regards to the dictatorship of High Chancellor Sutler who claims that there must be unity: “Strength through Unity....
