Today, Nordstrom operates 101 full-line stores across the US selling apparel, shoes and accessories for women, men and children. Currently Nordstrom is one of the top retail stores. Nordstrom is known for its shoes due to their amazing selection. They also have departments such as, men’s, women’s, juniors, kids, beauty, fragrance, handbags, and of course, shoes. Nordstrom has expanded their stores to have Nordstrom Café, Nordstrom e-bar, as well as a full service spa. Some other features Nordstrom has to offer are a Store credit card, online shopping, Customer support, catalogs, and the Nordstrom bank. Nordstrom’s corporate culture is truly one of a kind., “Service with a Smile” is a part of Nordstrom's corporate culture. With its easy-return policy and personal touches such as thank-you notes from employees, Nordstrom has developed a reputation for top-notch customer service. Members of the Nordstrom family own about 20% of the company's stock and closely supervise the chain. Despite the fact that Nordstrom’s is a huge corporation, while you work there, you still feel as if you are part of a family. Nordstrom has always been known as a more creative store; their store policies are very liberal and open for change.
The last two years, the retail industry has had a major decrease in the sales due to the state of the economy. When the economy is doing well, retailers do even better. When money is tight and the economy is not doing well, such as the recession of 2001 and the years to follow the tragic events that took place on 9/11, retailers tend to not do as well, and there sales numbers decrease. The economy has a huge effect on Nordstrom, when the economy is doing well sales increase, and when the economy is not doing well sales drop. Another great effect is time of year, with sales peaks changing with the change of seasons. Holidays and the changing seasons drive sales up.
