Recycling is garbage!
How many of you are recycling NOT because it is the law but because it is the right thing to do?
We seem to be in love with recycling. However, I will tell you that when recycling, you waste more money, you hurt environment and people more?
I’d like to present you that whether recycling economically and environmentally makes sense. And then, about its societal effects; whether our “recycling game” works for everyone on earth.
My first reason for suggesting that recycling is a bad idea because its concept is misleading about environmental issues; the reason behind recycling and the way it is executed are contradictory.
Critics charge that operating additional trucks to pick up recyclables and ships that carry them to third world countries, increase toxic diesel emissions, offsetting any environmental gains.
Economist Steven Landsburg suggested that the sole benefit of reducing landfill space is trumped by the energy needed and resulting pollution from the recycling process.
Another shocking fact that producing recycled paper uses more energy than virgin paper production and is more polluting.
Public policy analyst James V. DeLong points out that recycling is a manufacturing process and many of the methods use more energy than they save.
So, when we think we are recycling and environmental issues are solved by that - even partially -, it’s completely delusional.
Not surprisingly, recycling activities are economically ineffective, too.
Think of how much money spent on campaigns to raise awareness about recycling.
“Recycling may be the most wasteful activity in modern America: a waste of time and money, a waste of human and natural resources” according to John Tierney’s article in NY Times in 1996.
“We have to recognize that recycling costs money," says William Franklin, an engineer who conducted a national study of recycling costs for the not-for-profit group Keep America Beautiful.
