Religion As A Basis For Civilization

Throughout this course we have read a variety of novels that are very different in text, yet quite similar in theme. Each written and visual piece of work that we have viewed, studied and discussed this semester all seem to relate somehow in context. Starting with the book, Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond, we have read and learned about many ancient civilizations that still continue to exist today. These ancient civilizations, starting with the Sumerians, were the beginnings of the world as we now know it. Although each civilization appears to differ greatly from one another, they are actually very similar in many aspects. As they grew, each expanded in their separate ways and developed into various societies and cultures found around the world today. My consensus after researching the material for this class is that each of the ancient civilizations was founded upon religion and arose from people's strong beliefs and faiths in a higher form of being or existence.
