The Religion Of Tolkien

It is the year 1900, an old century is dying, a new one beginning, and one of the world's greatest novels finds its roots, though the author does not know it yet. It is in this year that Mabel Tolkien takes her two young sons, John Ronald Reuel and Hilary, to their first Catholic Church meeting; unknowing at the time that she was, in fact, showing John Ronald Reuel the door to his great novel and mythology The Silmarillion, of which The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit are just pieces of. Christianity seeps out of Tolkien's The Silmarillion in many different forms, most of which are unstated but still present throughout. In The Silmarillion the main bad guy, Melkor, has many similarities with the Christian concept of the Devil, the main god, Ilúvatar, is portrayed in a Christian way, and the Christian ideals of mercy, charity, and love of all beings, are placed in the most important and plot changing characters.
