Although some claim that Lyndon Johnson was a bad influence, he did leave a positive impact on the United States through his presidency. Lyndon Johnson was an encouraging president who wanted to get rid of negativity. He wanted civil rights throughout the United States and wanted to get rid of segregation. Lyndon Johnson was born on August 27th 1908, in Stonewall, Texas. He had many outlooks for the future to make the world better. (whitehouse.gov)
When he was fifteen years old, he graduated from Johnson City High School and moved to California. There he had some very odd jobs. A year after moving he had come back to his hometown and worked with the road constructing gang. (LBJ Bio)
He borrowed $75 from someone and enrolled to Southwest Texas State Teachers College. He earned money as an office helper and a janitor. He dropped out after just one year to serve as a principal and to teach fifth, sixth and seventh graders in a school in Cotulla. (LBJ Bio)
He was an all around Texan. His whole family were cattlemen and cotton farmers. When he was only twelve years of age, he told some of his classmates that he would be president one day.
During World War II, Johnson briefly served as a lieutenant commander in the Navy. He won a Silver Star in the South Pacific doing so by going on a dangerous bombing run. The plane started getting engine problems and they had to return it to base in New Guinea. While on the way, Japanese fighters were hitting the plane. His crew nick-named him “Raider“ Johnson after that. (Weaver)
Johnson campaigned for the House of Representatives in 1937 on a New Deal platform, and fortunately was successful. He was aided by his wife, Claudia Taylor, also known as “Lady Bird”, whom he married in 1934. In 1948, after just six years in the House, Johnson was elected to the Senate. Five years later, in 1953, Johnson became the youngest Minority Leader in Senate history. (Weaver)
