Same sex couples deserve the same rights

In 2006, a waitress named Sarah, was saving up change to go to Europe with her partner, Kimberly. They had been together for about two years, and even lived together, sharing living and other expenses. When they finally had enough change to make it to Europe and back, they took off. One night, while in Paris, they paid a visit to the Eiffel Tower. When they made it to the top, around sunset, Sarah surprised Kim with a proposal. It worked out so perfectly; right when THE question was asked, the lights turned on all around them in the Tower. This is just one of many stories that end right there. Same sex marriage is still not fully accepted by the law, or some of society. Gay couples are not as uncommon as some of society likes to believe. In fact, in a census done in 2000, the studies showed that about one million couples identified themselves as being a same sex couple in the U.S. (Mason, 2001). To treat this many people so unfairly for so long is prejudiced behavior that needs to be stopped. Despite the negative opinions of some people in our society has, gay couples deserve the same rights as any citizen in this country.
There are many reasons for same sex couples to have the same rights as the rest of the country. It is more than the legal aspects; it is the recognition of a committed and loving relationship. There are those that do not consider this to be a given right. In fact, few people might consider the legalization of same sex marriage as a special right. It is, in fact, a request to be considered equals in our diverse society. Equal rights in this country have always been a debated topic.
