Samuel Adams was many things. He was a politician, writer, philosopher, brewer, and even considered one of the founding fathers of the united states. His family was truly religious and politically active. There have been many ups and downs in his lifetime, of course, the ups outnumbering the downs.
Mr. Adams was born on September 27, 1722 to Samuel and Mary adams. He was the tenth child, but only the second to live past three years. His father was a deacon who participated actively in many political organizations. At the age of fourteen, Adams entered Harvard College and began studies in theology. He eventually shifted his studies to politics and political theology. He graduated in 1740 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1748, he started a public political publication called The Public Advertiser. The publication was “open to whatever may be adapted to state and defend the rights and liberties of mankind.” In this publication, Adams wrote and expressed is extreme disapproval of parliament and how unfair it is to Americans. In 1748, during this time of political enlightenment, he was struck by a personal tragedy. His father died due to an unknown cause in March. He inherited the family brewery and also one-third of the family estate, which he shared with his brother and sister. In October 1749, he married Elizabeth Checkley and had 6 children together, which only two stayed healthy and lived past four months. Elizabeth died of stillborn illness in 1757 while giving birth to their sixth child. By 1760, Adams was bankrupt from mismanaging most of his inheritance.
In 1761, he became active in political town meetings and took a leading role in the events that led up to Boston tea party in 1773. In 1774, he was elected as one of the delegates in the First Continental Congress in Philadelphia. The signing of the Declaration of Independence 1776 was one of the highest points of Adams’ career.
