Chan, Yuen-Ying. "Reimagining America." Social Research 72 (2005): 935-952.
Academic Search Elite. EBSCOhost. In this academic journal, Yuen-Ying Chan chronicles the changes in the Chinese public attitude towards the U.S. He claims that relations between the two countries have undergone many changes as the years have passed. He asserts that U.S was seen as the benign imperialist and Chinese perceptions of the U.S were that of a menacing, modern and rich nation. Now however, Chinese officials and ordinary citizens are looking up to the U.S. with admiration and viewing it as a land of possibilities and fulfillment. Also, he mentions the war on Iraq and states how all these actions are helping the Chinese economy as its constantly buying treasury bonds and parts of the US debt. He ends the article by declaring that the Chinese intellectuals will soon rise above the “victimhood mindset” and start interrogating America.
Evidences provided are strong and prove to be extremely convincing to the reader. A lot of statistics are provided relating the current international trade between China and the U.S. Specific mention is given to the effect of the 9/11 attacks and Iraq situation on the economic infrastructures of both countries. He transitions commendably for historical facts to present developments. The author proves his credentials of being the director and founder of the Journalism and Media Studies Center at the University of Hong Kong. The article is overall extremely credible and reliable as it reflects his knowledge and expertise about international relations.
