Seperation Of Church And State

Did the founding father intend the separation of church and state to be absolute?
This question has literally been debated for centuries. However, with the 1962 Supreme Court case Engel vs. Vitale where the Supreme Court ruled 6 to 1 against prayer in schools it has added new fuel to an already hot fire. What were the founding fathers true intentions when they put in the constitution that there would be a separation between church and state? It's not difficult to see the influence religion has on our society. The money we have has the passage "in God we trust" on it, the Declaration of Independence makes several reference to God calling him the "Creator " and asking for the protection of "Divine Providence". Even in our history of government, religion has played a part. The most obvious case that comes to mind is the Salem witch trials.
