September 11, 2001: Disasters Strike America

September 11, 2001 was a tragic day in the United States. Al Qaeda suicide

hijackers crashed American Airlines Flight 11 and 175 into the World Trade Centers

in New York. Two other groups of hijackers crashed Flight 77 into The Pentagon

and Flight 93 into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania ("The Attacks" 1). The 19

hijackers killed approximately 2,998 people, including themselves (Smith 13).

Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower at 8:46 a.m. Eastern Time, and 17

minutes later, Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower. Most people called 911

screaming "Help," but they did not know where they was inside the building. Both

towers collapsed creating a massive cloud of smoke that ran through New York.

The South Tower collapsed about 29 minutes before the North Tower collapsed

("The Attack" 1). Approximately 2,750 people died, and 1,614 of the 2,750 were

identified from recovered physical remains. Some people were trapped under all the

rubble and ash. Rescue parties were formed and many peoples lives were saved

American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the west side of the Pentagon. The

Pentagon is where some of our army is based. The side just got finished being

upgraded. Approximately 184 people died, includingeveryone on the plane. Out of

an act of respect, on the 5th anniversary of the attack, a memorial of 184 beams of

light shone up from the center courtyard of the Pentagon. A light for every victim

("Pentagon Memorial" 1).

Passengers of Flight 93 fought for their lives and tried to stop the hijackers.

They did a good job, but the plane went down in a field in Pennsylvania. The plane
