Signs (Central Theme)
M. Knight Shyamalan’s film Signs is about human emotions set in motion by a supernatural event. The film centers around the Hess family living on a farm in rural Pennsylvania. One day, odd crop circle designs appear within their corn field. This incident later leads to the invasion of aliens on earth. In M. Knight Shyamalan’s film, “Signs,” the central theme Shyamalan attempts to get across is that everything happens for a reason. Shyamalan displays this theme by using Bo’s inability to finish glasses of water, an alien book Morgan purchases, Morgan’s asthma, Merrill’s habit of always swinging away, and Colleen’s final words before her death to support the theme that everything happens for a reason.
In the film, Graham Hess’s daughter Bo has a strange habit of leaving half full glasses of water lying all over the house. She always complains that the water tastes funny and refuses to finish the rest of the water that remains. Soon enough, the glasses of water that Bo leaves around the house add up. Toward the end of the film, the Hess family is faced with a battle with an alien. During the brawl, Merrill discovers that the water Bo left around the house acts as an acid when it comes in contact with the alien. As a result, it gives Merrill the upper hand in the fight with the alien.
Morgan Hess, Graham’s son, is a mature child for his age. Morgan displays a sense of maturity with many traits, one of them being his love of reading. One day, Graham gives Morgan money to purchase a book at the local bookstore in town. After browsing for a few minutes, Morgan decides on an alien book written by scientists. Oddly, the manager of the store does not know what a book like that was doing on his shelves. However, Morgan is still able to purchase the book. The next couple of days, Morgan reads the book with his younger sister Bo. One morning, Graham walks into their bedroom and skims through the book and comes to a pause at a picture of a house and a U.F.O right...
