Mary Dyer was on of "us" who became one of "them" in the sense that at first she was a law biding citizen who later stood for something greater that she thought was more important than law. In 1635, Mary Dyer left England for the Americas to find a new life where she could practice her freedom of religion. I think another way you could look at the "us" and "them" aspect as being two different groups. "US," being Mary Dyer and her belief in freedom of religion, and standing by what she believes in and whiling to die for it. "Them," would be everyone else that didn't agree with her and her beliefs. The Quakers would be "Us" and the Puritan Church would be "them."
