What Is A Social Problem?

Morals and values have become a big focus of the current administration of the United States government. The current U.S. government head of state wants us to believe that certain behaviors do not represent the consensus of this society’s moral and value system from which it was founded. There are certain acts performed that defy the views of the U.S.   which reflect negatively upon its population. There two immediate concerns, which have become the focus of political and religious leaders, are abortion and homosexuality. This government has instituted a global gag rule that objects to any country supporting abortion as a means of birth control. Religious sects have singled out the private affairs of gays and lesbians as immoral. These two strong institutions have been pushing for the past several years to condemn and punish those who participate in these acts. Personally, I don’t think either is a social issue or problem. One is a personal choice (abortion) and the other is biological (homosexuality).   These do not make them social problems.
    Abortion and homosexuality have been ongoing issues within society because of politicians, lobbyists, religious leaders, and personal agendas. Abortion has been addressed through legislation from the 1970’s in Roe vs. Wade. Unfortunately, certain political arenas have been able to revisit the issue for possible dissemination of the previous legislation. This is not a social problem. It is a choice, a woman’s choice. Political and religious individuals want us to believe that women just nonchalantly decide to terminate a pregnancy because they don’t want it. Making a decision to end a future of one’s self is not an easy decision and there are consequences, which arise from it. Mental issues become prevalent. I know from personal experience. One does not just forget they had an abortion and move on. It lives with you forever. It has been 22 years for me and I still remember as if it was yesterday.
