Some Of The Customs, Rituals, And/Or Ceremonies Associated With Your Ethnic Group
I have many different cultures in my family. One ceremony my family has is one that has to do with funerals. Once a year the whole family goes to the cemetery. At the cemetery with all the other families we put a candle on each of the graves. As the sun goes down a band plays a very cheery song as we all watch the sunset. All graves are done with tile above ground. We do this to celebrate the loved ones to show that they have not been forgotten. Another one that has to do with the dead is that if a woman was bleeding when they died, no women are allowed to be at the funeral. We also have a ritual when women are pregnant. When pregnant women are not allowed to bend down on hands and knees, this is said to be dangerous to the baby. Family is everything to my culture. When you live in Suriname (my dad was born there) and you do something against the law, you sometimes get shunned. The government allows you to live your life out by being in the streets, the rest of the people are not allowed to talk to that person r even feed and cloth that person. If you eat outside a restraint you just leave you left over’s on the table, and when you are gone the shunned people can then come and take it. The people who are punished are not able to look others in the eye they have to keep their heads down as they walk past you. In Suriname they also have parades for no reason at all. People gather and play songs, and dance through the streets. Another thing we do is whenever you go to someone’s home you take of your shoes at the door. You never wear a bathing suit in the lobby of a hotel. You only wear it at the pool. It is also normal for men to have a mistress and people just ignore that they see it. Nobody discusses or ask who that person is. You also do not display any affection in public because they believe that is only done in the home. When dancing then it is ok to display affection.
