South Africa Introduction

In April 1994, the African National Congress party won South Africa's first non-racial elections. Nelson Mandela became president of the newly formed Government of National Unity. South Africa's Commonwealth membership was restored and remain sanctions lifted as the nation took its seat in the UN General Assembly after a 20- year absence.

The government has since succeeded in starting to address key areas of inequality in South Africa, while for the most part maintaining political and economic stability. Basic democratic rights of free speech and press continue to flourish. Under the leadership of Thabo Mbeki (since 1999), the government is slowly expanding its network of public services for the benefit of the country's disadvantaged people. Achievements have however been steady and gradual rather than sweeping and spectacular.
