The Sportswriter Essay
This article is a very interesting one because both of these men Dan and Mark have applied for the position of editor. Both men have seemed qualified for the position but it seems that Mark has the edge on Dan because of his experience and his background knowledge and discipline that he has received from the military. Despite Dan history with the newspaper the Chronicle didn’t feel like he was the proper hire and felt that Mark would be a better hire. There are reasons for this and it will be examined throughout the paper.
Dan seems to have all the qualities that would make a very good sports writer, but in the case of the hiring he acted in a very unprofessional when he didn’t get the promotion. He felt that he was slapped in the face and severely disrespected. Even through this entire situation he still maintains a businesslike approach and delivered high quality articles. But, one of the main things that he started to do was start to come into work extremely late and he never got disciplined for it. It seemed that he was doing this on purpose maybe because he didn’t care anymore since he thought he was done wrong. At one point he was complimented on his he negative behavior that he was displaying with the company. This is a complete 360 of how Dan usually is. Back in the beginning of the semester we have learned about the Expectancy theory and this fits well with the situation. The definition of the of it is that it is a theory of choices someone makes based on their motivation and it is the process that they go through to make that final choice. Dan in this case felt like all his years of work with the company has gone by unnoticed via not getting the promotion. He then started to come in late because he felt like he has been a team player for the entire time he has been with the newspaper and that hasn’t worked to my benefit so I’m going to do my own thing.
