Society has placed many expectations on the criminal justice system to punish and rehabilitate individuals who commit crimes. Punishment, rehabilitation, deterrence are the four objectives of the criminal justice system. Punishment has always been the number one goal In the United States, when dealing with individuals who commit acts of crime.   Punishment and rehabilitation has become a huge argument among many criminal justice theorists throughout history. Many say that punishment and rehabilitation has been analyzed to see the effects on victims and offenders and the social and fiscal impact on our society. Schools of Criminology have proposed that punishment is used to create deterrence and rehabilitation to reduce recidivism.
    Deterrence of Crime
Deterrence is said to be the primary goal in the criminal justice system which has three different special or specific deterrence and general deterrence. The purpose of these types of deterrence is used to bring about fear on the offender so that future crimes will not be committed. Punishment has always been the idea that has deterred law violators from committing crime or repeating criminal acts. Trying to cut down on the recidivism rate among convicted felons after they are released from prison; deterrence mechanism are very recognized and useful. With 63% of ex-felons returning to prison, deterrence methods are effective. Another   factor within the criminal justice system that contribute to why punishment isn’t really truly effective in the appeals processes in cases. Incarceration is a form of punishment and a temporary fix to crime while the offender is confined.
