Steel Mongolias
Steel Magnolia's is a movie set in the south during the eighties. The title refers to the relationship that the women have together and the strength that relationships acquire. Magnolias are flowers that grow on trees; beautiful delicate flowers. One can see a woman like this, beautiful and delicate. Steel, on the other hand, is unbreakable and strong. Together, you have unbreakable, beautiful women. The challenges that these six women face are nothing impossible to handle.
In the movie, Shelby, played by Julia Roberts, says, "I would rather have thirty minutes of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special." This is a great quote to live life by. If one were to not experience anything out of the ordinary in life, I would assume that their life would be dull and meaningless. Shelby wanted to provide a happy life to her daughter even if it was at the expense of herself. Those thirty minutes is the time that she would spend with her daughter, the sacrifice that she would give just to provide another life.
The six women in the movie: Shelby, M'Lynn, Truvy, Annelle, Clairee, and Ousier, form a bond that seems as if they've been friends their whole lives. Truvy owns and runs a beauty shop where most of the movie takes place. This is where the gossip, tears, and happiness is shared. Ousier provides the story with the comic relief. M'Lynn and Shelby are the mother/daughter bond in the story, with a conflict of the daughter getting her own life and the mother missing her "baby."
Steel Magnolia's has been a classic for twenty years. It's a movie that everyone can enjoy, men, women, and families. There are elements in the movie that everyone can relate to, such as the mother/daughter relationship or the internal pressure of childbirth. This classic is a comedy with emotional twist that is great for everyone's enjoyment.
