Margaret Laurence and Ernest Thompson have the same portrayal of the elderly as is shown in the two characters, Norman Thayer of On Golden Pond and Hagar Shipley of the Stone Angel.
Hagar and Norman both are unwilling to show weakness either through emotional contact with others or physical needs. Both characters also venture through a journey of redemption and in the end are saved.

Hagar Shipley and Norman Thayer posses similar character traits. The primary example is their inability to show emotion, Hagar would not tell Bram she loved him.
