Torey L. Hayden's One Child narrates the true story of a young teacher's quest to help abused, disturbed, and mentally challenged students.
Torey's class is called the "garbage class" according to the administration. Yet one of her students touches her heart and soul; however, Torey is compassionate and concerned about all nine students.
Perhaps Sheila is the most challenging of Torey's class never speaking, crying, yet filled with hate. Sheila was abandoned by her fourteen-year-old mother and abused by her alcoholic father. Torey remembers reading an article about Sheila; she had burned a three-year-old boy. When Torey found out that Sheila was going to be in her class; she thinks that Sheila is going to be trouble.
