Surealism
The word Surreal' means unreal or not real. Surrealism is the art that did not show the reality of the world. It shows the deeper side of human's mind, the sub-consciousness that mostly comes out through involuntary actions such as dream. Therefore, surrealist art is very much dream-like. The Surrealist movement was effected by Dadaism lead by Marcel Duchamp and the Freudian theory of psychoanalysis. So, the surrealist artists' vision of art is following the idea of showing the sub-conscious. The purpose of this essay is to examine Dadaism by Duchamp and the surrealist arts by surrealist artists, such as Rene Magritte, Joan Miro, Salvador Dali and Marc Chagall. This essay will look at these artists' vision of art and how each artist present surrealist art in their own view through their work.
The Dada movement in early twentieth century was one of the main influences that affected the Surrealist artists. Duchamp was the artist who lead this movement. His art was different from the other kind art. His arts had some influence from Cubism, like in his Nude Descending the Stair Case. This picture is a picture of a woman is walking down the stairs. The figure of the woman appears to be a blurry blocks like figure that has the shadow following her. The movement of this woman looks quite real. It makes the viewer feel like she is really walking down the stairs.
Duchamp also created another form of art that use things that was already made and put it together as piece of art. His Bicycle Wheel is one of his Ready made' arts.
The Bicycle Wheel is very interesting in the juxtaposition of something in motion (the wheel) and something very still (the chair). The idea of Dadaism is to mock art because the Dadaist believed that art has become fake and that art only belonged to the rich.
