John Cheever’s “The swimmer” is so interesting. It talks about Neddy Merrill the journey. He had a good career, wife and four daughters. But he didn’t know how to appreciate. When he has a problem, he decides to escape the problem by drinking alcohol. Moreover, he decides to visit all the pool around his town. He wants to find a quiet place. Because he doesn’t like a gossip.
Neddy Merrill is a Protagonist character. He is a business man. He has a big house. He is probably a rich man. He decides a journey; he goes through different pool, such as private pool and public pool. Every pool has different of color. That point out he get different problems. Every time he feels upset. He wills drink a lot of Alcohol which means escape; because he feels whiskey would make him feel better. However, he escapes there to another new swimming pool. His mind is confused with variety thing such as he feels bored in the party; he doesn’t find any new friends.
In the beginning of the story, he stays at a cocktail pasty at the Westerhazys’ pool. He enjoys it with his friends. After, he goes to the Grahams’ pool and so on to meet his friends. In the middle of the story, he is stuck on the half of the highway which makes a conflict. However, he keeps going to public pool. When he arrives the public pool, he sees a weird request, “All swimmers must take a shower before using the pool.” He does the request. Unfortunately, when he is swimming in there, a lifeguard tries stopping him from swimming. He is not satisfied for that. Because he hasn’t drink yet, he isn’t swims enough in the public pool. After public pool, the people get mean to him, his feelings get worse. Finally, he gets home, but the house was empty because his family already left.
In the beginning of the story, Neddy Merrill was energetic and strong, but at the end, he becomes tired and weak. Neddy’s journey is just like the life, he starts in the party and feels exciting. But he gets home; He...
