The increasing attractiveness of tattoos has become more than just the latest fashion wave. In actuality, tattoos have been defining cultures around the world for thousands of years. Tattoos has gone from a fashion statement that once was symbolic for certain groups of people, such as sailors, convicts and bikers, has become a form of expression for all that enjoy the art of tattooing. Tattoos represent a chapter in the life of every person who has taken part in this art form. Tattoos are a visible reference of expression which can tell a story, help cope with grief, or be a fad. Knowing all of these reasons, tattoos have become something society has regarded highly and condemned as self mutilation. Immanuel Kant has proposed the idea of self imposed immaturity, or conforming to society and its rules. Have we finally shed our self imposed immaturity by getting tattoos as a culture? Yes we finally have. Tattoos have become a way as a society to express ourselves and to break free of this mold that has been placed upon us.
Immanuel Kant was one of the great writers during the enlightenment period which was better known as the age of reason. Kant claimed that there were guardians are here to voice the opinions for others. They are considered to be extreme and they create negative associations to the public’s mind. From childhood were taught that tattoos were symbolic for sailors, convicts, punks, bikers, and musicians. In the United States many prisoners and criminal gangs use distinctive tattoos to indicate facts about their criminal actions, prison sentences and gang association. Countless people have received our first tattoos without the permission of our “guardians”. Although you must be a certain age to obtain one, tattooists are willing to overlook this fact. They know the desire to join the “radicals” that have take part in this art form.
