The Battle of Gettysburg as a Turning Point
of the Civil War.
The Civil War, the bloodiest war that ever happened in the United States, lasted four years. Before June 1863, The Confederate Army took most of the victories. The Union felt hopeless and desperate. The battle of Gettysburg was the turning point of the Civil War because it was the first serious defeat of the Confederate Army, which forced it to return to Virginia, and prevented the war from spreading across the North. The Union soldiers understood that it is possible to defeat the Confederacy. To understand why the battle of Gettysburg is considered as a turning point, we have to learn the circumstances and the course of it.
The battle of Gettysburg took place during the American Civil War, so to understand the reasons of the battle, we must first learn why the war actually happened? Firstly, there were great differences between the southern and northern states. The U.S. were becoming more and more industrial, but the factories and mass production techniques were centered in the North. While the northern states were becoming more powerful, the southern ones were losing their power. They wanted to be less dependent on federal authority and, as states, to make their own laws. Secondly, agricultural Southerners needed slaves to work on the farms because without them there would be much more work to do. On the other hand, Industrial Northerners didn't need slaves at all. They considered slavery as un-Christian and immoral. Although some people from South also thought that slavery is wrong, their hands were tied because they were dependent on it for their economy. Thirdly, for the slave states, Abraham Lincoln's election meant that slavery would be abolished. Actually, all that Lincoln wanted was to prevent it from spreading to the free states.
