Earlier, the market had seen the two format wars. In 1970, Sony’s Betamax and JVC’s VHS had a format war, and finally Sony discontinued Betamax in 2002 as VHS acquired more than 90% market. Further in 1990, Sony and Philips Electronics’ format for Video Compact Disc – VCD had a format war with Toshiba and Warner Brother’s DVD format and eventually Sony and Philips compromised and settled on accepting DVD format. In both the wars Sony has failed to win and Toshiba technology established its DVD format with total consumer acceptance.

In the further Technology Development Sony developed next generation DVD model format using Optical Disc System named as Blu-ray and Toshiba developed format based on Advanced Optical Disc – (AOD) System named as HD DVD. Further due to major acceptance of Blu-ray format by Hollywood studios, Toshiba has decided to discontinue HD DVD format and concentrate on DVD format with high definition features.

TECHNOLOGY EVOLUTION AND COMPETETIVE COMPARISION BETWEEN HD DVD AND BLU-RAY FORMATS

1) Both the formats have high definition feature, claim high end performance and major up-gradation using blue violet laser in place of conventional red laser as in standard DVD format.

2) The wave length is most important factor of high definition DVDs and though both use 405 mm wavelength blue violet laser they have different optics. The optics differ in two ways, since the Blu-ray disc has a tighter track pitch – the single thread of data that spirals from the inside of the disc all the way out, it can hold more pits – information, on the same size disc as HD DVD, even with a laser of same wave length.
