Transforming the United States Health Care System

Purpose The Japanese health care system should be used as a model in transforming U.S. health care.

Introduction A great deal of ink has been spilled in deriding the U.S. health care system.   Most of the criticisms revolve around a set of the following core messages:   The costs of health care in the United States are exorbitantly high. There are too many citizens who are uninsured and thus lack adequate access to care, and the quality of care is sub par in comparison with other industrialized countries.   In contrast, Japan’s health care industry is commonly referenced as a benchmark for how a well functioning health care system should work. Advocates of the Japanese system of health care laud it for the level of service it provides to its citizens and for its better containment of costs.   In our research of these two differing systems, we surmise that Japan’s health care system is better than that of the U.S. overall. While the U.S. system has its faults, it nonetheless posses several positive attributes that Japan itself would benefit from emulating.  

What follows now is an analysis and discussion of the two national systems which provided for our premise.   As stated previously, we believe that Japan’s health care system is stronger than that of the U.S.   Before we round back to this conclusion, we will discuss the positive attributes of the U.S. System, the positive aspects of the Japanese system, then the weaknesses of each.
