Types Of Chemical Reactions
A gas formation is a reaction which occurs typically when an acid or base react with a salt. The gas formed usually also contains two nonmetals such as water. An example of this would be: H2SO4 + Na2CO3 à Na2SO4 + H2O + CO2 where H2SO4 is an acid (Sulfuric acid) and Na2CO3 is a salt (Sodium Carbonate). The two react to form Na2SO4 and H2O, both nonmetals, and a gas, Co2. An observed physical change is that a gas is emitted and the solution bubbles. An observed chemical change worth noting is that the pH usually changes when heated.
Redox reactions are a combination of Reduction reactions (a chemical change accompanied by a gain of electrons) and Oxidation reactions (a chemical change accompanied by a loss of electrons). Redox reactions involve electron transfer from one atom/molecule to another. The reactant which loses the electron is oxidized and conversely, the reactant that gains the electron is reduced. The equation Zn + 2HCl à ZnCl2 + H2 is an example of a redox......
