I belong to a faceless class of people seen everywhere known as cashiers. Cashiers represent the face of a company and must work in the company of salesmen in order to complete a sale. According to Webster’s dictionary, the very word cashier refers to an executive who superintends monetary transactions. In other words, this definition implies that a cashier is no more than a vending machine. From my experiences as a cashier at banana republic, I’ve learned that a cashier is more than an executive who handles financial transactions. A cashier is an individual who accurately and proficiently manages and verifies various forms of payments such as checks, credit cards, and cash. Secondly, their skills must proficient enough for them to contend with numerous general duties that are indirectly related to cashiering. Finally, a cashier must also be athletically fit in order to cope with the physical and emotional stressors that they confront at their job.
As previously stated, a cashier must be accurate and proficient when verifying various forms of payments. They must have knowledge of signatures, routing numbers, and bank account numbers when processing checks. In addition to, knowledge on how to process credit cards which include credit card enrollment, purchases, and bill payment. A cashier must also know when to ask for an individual’s Identification. Furthermore, a cashier must have the ability to rapidly and precisely tender cash. This variety of payments increases the complexity of a job.
A cashier must be flexible enough to handle numerous general duties that are indirectly related to being a cashier. They must change garbage when it is need to be changed, and ensure that no hazardous materials are kept behind the register. They are also held responsible for knowing where each piece of merchandise is placed on the sales floor.
