VoIP technologies represent a breakthrough in communication mediums, drastically reducing costs of long distance telephony, and also enhancing the possibilities of various voice enabled applications and services. There are still barriers to prolific adoption of VoIP, including quality issues and switching costs, and bandwidth management problems as well as data security, but research is under-way to get around these problems or to solve them. Traditional telecom companies have either joined the VoIP bandwagon or tried to topple it – in either case making VoIP a very exciting innovation which has caused wide ranging ripples in the business and technology worlds. Further technical advancements, pairings with other technologies like Wi-Fi and traditional telephone switching will make VoIP something to watch out for in the coming years.

VoIP: An Introduction and Brief Technical Overview

VoIP involves sending voice information in digital form in TCP/IP packets rather than in the traditional protocols of the public switched telephone network (PSTN). IP telephony consists of technologies that use the internet to exchange voice, fax, and other forms of information that have traditionally been carried over PSTN. Using the Internet bypasses the tolls PSTN provider. The biggest challenge in VoIP is reliability and dependability. VoIP service providers are beginning to include long distance and international calls on their offerings primarily because it costs the same to call Delhi or Dallas.
