In The Worm by Shahe Mankerian, the thesis in which is implemented in the story is about an Armenian guy by the name of Nshan, whom has met, fallen in love with, and is marrying an American girl. The setting of the story/play takes place mainly in the men’s restroom with four of Nshan’s best friends whom he has chosen to appoint as ushers at the wedding. From the beginning of the reading to the end the confliction between the friends grows as they discuss how disappointed they are in their friends’ decision of marrying outside of his race. The plays initiative is to display how most Armenians find marrying outside of the race to be the beginning of a lifelong downfall, and that if they marry someone out of their own culture that their spouse will never fully comprehend and live life like an Armenian.
As I have learned from my own experiences in life, I have noticed how vital it is for girls and guys to marry within their race. Growing up, I have continuously been told that I HAVE to marry an Armenian, to continue and grow the Armenian race. Growing up in a family that follows tradition as if it were a doctrine, I have learned how important it is to keep tradition flowing throughout my lifetime. However, being born and raised in America, where I am constantly surrounded to those of whom are from different ethnic backgrounds, temptation to fall in love with or meet someone of another race is highly inevitable.
In the play, Nshan’s friends are disappointed at the fact that he is marrying an American girl, and will soon fall into the “love” spell women have over men by throwing out the traditions of his own culture to inherit that of another culture. The ushers mention that when young and restless, it is alright to date and mingle with girls of another race, but when it comes down to giving your name to another woman to stick with one of your own race.
