Strong Logo Design
Sun Microsystems logo is an example of a poor logo design. The company’s logo is composed of a purple square design located to the left of their company name. The design of the square is clever, but looks out of place and inconsistent with the rest of the logo. Besides the purple color used throughout the design, there is no other apparent solidity. Additionally, there are three different fonts found in this logo. The lack of consistency can greatly reduce a company’s integrity and cause confusion for possible customers. Consistency is one of the most vital components to a successful logo and Sun Microsystems failed to display it. Overall, the entire logo design is incoherent and cluttered.
PayPal recently introduced an edited version of its logo. Though their new logo only underwent a few revisions, the changes were unnecessary and created a feel and look very different from their original design. One issue with their new logo is the fact that changing a company logo can be unsettling for customers and lead them to question the company’s stability and reliability. Especially with a company like PayPal, which handles money online, there needs to be a high level of trust and feeling of security with the corporation for a person to become a customer. Thus, the alteration was unnecessarily risky, especially since PayPal already had an established brand and large customer base that identified strongly with the old logo. Additionally, the new color scheme for the logo is much less bold and effective as the previous one. Not only do the two blues not complement each other, but they are also colors that provide poor contrast when used against color backgrounds. The company made a very poor decision when altering their already successful logo. Moreover, the changes they decided to make did not at all provide any possible improvements.
