War Of The Worlds

INTRODUCTION
Science Fiction provides a stage for the exploration of scandal and events which are overwhelmingly feared by people at the time. The film version of War of the Worlds can be read as a portrayal of what a possible invasion by the Soviet Union could be like for America. America is represented as a peaceful, Christian society, under attack by evil beings from a foreign background. Technological defences are unable to stop the invading aliens, and all hope turns to belief that America is blessed by the Lord and cannot be overrun by evil. This faith is proven by the sudden death of the invaders, not from scientific developments, but from simple microbes, something beyond people's control.

THE FILM
The 1953 movie version of War of the Worlds is based on the novel by H.G. Wells, in so far as it retains the original premise of the story. Aliens attack earth, seeking to colonise our planet for themselves. Humankind fight the aliens with all their firepower but......
