Essay on Somalia
The archaeological evidence showed that people had inhabited lands now known as present-day Somalia by 100AD. The Arabs called them beriberi. The Arabs developed trade centres on the coast of Somalia and these ports were thriving till today.
The people of Somalia consist of 6 major clans the overall behaviour of these people was rebellious and unwilling to bow to forces. The clan families were very important to Somali life and it is still the same today.
This piece of unpeaceful land was subject to invasion several times and colonized several times. These overlords came from as far as Turkey – all salivating for its strategic location. By the early twentieth century, the British Empire and fascist Italy split up this country as their colony. This time, the six clans were forced to submit themselves to the colonialists whose weapons were more advanced – they had cannons, firearms, even an air force. The Somali’s shield and spear was hardly a match for these modern weapons.
During the colonial rule, nationalism had been growing in Somalia, in 1934, the first Somali political party formed- the Somali Youth Club. By 1960, Britain and Italy were forced to grand freedom to their colonies, since colonialism had become a bit old-fashioned and, more to the point, not longer profitable.
The two colonies united on the same day, but many obstacles confronted this newly liberated nation. Somalia had poor economy, its main exports were to its formal colonists - Britain and Italy, and it had to rely upon foreign debt to build an infrastructure. Hoping to solve these problems, Somalia started to nationalize the country, that being, strip the people of their clans and moue them to be loyal to the nation instead of their clans or families.
