The Catechism of the Catholic Church cites fasting as one of the precepts of the Church. Observance of the prescribed days of fasting and abstinence "ensures the time of ascesis (self-discipline) and penance which prepare us for the liturgical feasts; they help us acquire mastery over our instincts and freedom of heart" The purpose of fasting can be three-fold:

First is discipline. Fasting, or going without food, brings the physical body into spiritual subjection of the regenerated human spirit. It is a discipline of love for the Lord. Fasting does not change God. He is the same before, during and after the fast. But fasting will change the person. It will help him keep the flesh under the Spirit and make him more sensitive to the Holy Spirit. It means isolating oneself for a time from bodily cravings to focus undividedly on the Lord.

Second is discernment. The evidence of Scripture for one purpose of fasting points to the need for discernment and spiritual perception as well......
