Workplace Observation
Many organizations have their own ways of operating. Within the operations are certain things that take place on a daily basis. Within the United States Marine Corps, the two things that may stand out to individuals who have no clue about the military would be the organizational customs and the dress and language, (language being referred to as jargon).
Organizational customs take place within an organization on an every day basis. A good example of customs that take place within an organization on an every day basis would be saluting of officers in the military. As a recruit in boot camp, I had to adjust to the customs and courtesies within the Marine Corps. General military custom and courtesies would entail an enlisted serviceman saluting a commissioned officer. The enlisted service personnel could have been in the service for 15 to 20 years, but whenever he or she comes within the presence of a commissioned officer, who could be a novice, the enlisted service personnel has to salute the commissioned officer. High ranked commissioned officers such as a general or a colonel deserve the respect of a salute from lower ranking officers and enlisted personnel. In the Marine Corps, commissioned officers are to be saluted outdoors only. When inside a building, the lower ranked Marines must stand at attention in an act of respect to acknowledge the presence of that high ranking officer or official.
Most organizations have a certain dress code. I can remember working at such places where I had to where a business casual type of clothing which consisted of a nice dress shirt or polo shirt, with or without a tie; a nice pair of trousers and hard soled shoes. Sneakers or flip flops were not allowed. Usually on Fridays or Saturdays people were permitted to wear appropriate jeans and t-shirts. I have worked for employers who required me to dress as comfortable as I wanted to, according to the weather. I have also worked for employers who required me to dress in uniforms...
