World War One
The assassination of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand occurred on June 28, 1914. This event caused a European War that tore Europe in half. The terrorist organization called The Black Hand planned the assassination and had success. After the assassination, Austria wanted justice from Serbia to strongly punish the group in a short time period. Austria asked for assistance if a war were to occur between Serbia and Austria. Germany replied with a blank check declaring they were fully supporting Austria. An alliance system formed years before the outbreak of World War I and during it. When Austria declared war on Serbia the alliances stood strong to support each side equally. Thus, Europe broke into a major war among neighbors. The assassination was forgotten because the majority of the countries were in it for self-gain, honor, reputation, money, colonies, and a better economy.
The Black Hand was concerned that if Francis Ferdinand gave the rights to an ethnic group that it would be harder for the Slavs to gain their own country. They planned the assassinated and killed the Archduke Francis Ferdinand on June 28, 1914. Austria waited a month to see what would happen to the members involved. However, Austria grew impatient and sent a letter to Wilhelm II of Germany to ask for their support if they went to war against Serbia. Wilhelm II responded with a blank check showing their full support for Austria.
Austria then sent an ultimatum to Serbia and gave them forty-eight hours to accept the terms. The terms included: all anti-Austria propaganda to be removed, teachers, books, officials that opposed the Austria government to be removed, and the suspects involved in the assassination to be tried by Austrian judges. Also Austrian officials would be sent to Serbia to make sure the terms were completed and to also help suppress the anti-Austria propaganda.
