Wuthering Heights
The rich and complex novel of Wuthering Heights expresses the transformation of love. A love that commences as romantic and innocent and develops into inhumain and insane obsession. Emily Bronte's readers observe emotional depletion, combined with revenge through elements which clearly classify Wuthering Heights as an interperative piece. All elements of interpretative literature are presented. Elements such as Heathcliff's character development from a victim to a villian, a plot which does not emphasize suspence and an ending which leaves the reader puzzled and pessimistic prevail.
Nelly, the housemaid at Wuthering Heights, the manor home, and the narrator of the story, first introduces Heathcliff and expands the reader's relationship with him through an account of events that composed his life. Mr. Earnshaw, the original owner of Wuthering Heights adopts Heathcliff from Liverpool. Upon arrival, Heathcliff is immediatly different from his new sibblings. The fair-skinned Catherine and Hindley stand in contrast to Heathcliff with his dark-skinned complexion. The difference in complexion symbolizes and forshadows the darkness that lurks in Heathcliff's character that will emerge later in the story. Hindly recognizes this difference, as well as the increasing closeness between his father and Heathcliff, which eventually triggers emotions of jealously. Hindly expresses consistant harshness and hostility towards Heathcliff, which creates the first situation in which Heathcliff could be viewed as a victum. Throught futher recollection or prior events, the love of Catherine and Heathcliff becomes exposed. Catherine expressed kindness and love towards Heathcliff from the instant she meets him, creating a friendship which would develop into love. Catherine resides at the nearby home of the Lintons for five months, where a close friendship between Catherine and Edgar is formed.
