‘To what extent did the Policy of Appeasement cause the second world war?’ Explain your answer.
The policy of appeasement caused the Second World War to a lesser extent, because there were other factors involved that had a more direct impact leading to the war. Although the Policy of Appeasement did have a hand in causing the war, it was not the fundamental or main cause.
The Policy of Appeasement caused the Second World War because it encouraged Germany to advance. Hitler’s confidence and the German morale grew, allowing them to believe that they could do whatever they wanted without the French or British stopping them. The Policy of Appeasement gave Hitler no reason to stop his advance into other countries, giving him a free passageway to attack other countries unhindered. In 1938, Hitler gained Sudetenland through the Munich Agreement settled on 29 September, signed by Hitler, Mussolini, Chamberlain and Daladier. This was a result of the Policy of Appeasement, which gave in to Hitler’s demands. Therefore, the Policy of Appeasement caused the Second World War because it failed to stop the coming of war, and also helped to hasten the war by allowing Germany to freely conquer certain countries in Europe as was their goal. France and Britain sent the message that Hitler could freely take over countries in Eastern Europe, or that they were powerless to stop them. Furthermore, Hitler’s advancement into Sudetenland was a gamble but the policy of appeasement put into place by Britain encouraged him to continue Germany’s advancement. Historical accounts have shown that if Britain and France had stopped his advance then, he would have given up because of his weak military force as compared to the French and British. The policy of appeasement therefore acted as a starting board for WWII, because Hitler was not stopped in his conquer of Europe.
