X Theory Of Managment

X Theory
There are three types of theories involving management. They are the X, Y, and Z theories. Each has its own style of management, with each their own morals. The following information on the x theory will show how it's evolved over time. I will also give an example through my own personal experience of how an x theory manager acts and what I learned from it. Finally I will give my opinion on why I prefer the other two theories over the X theory.

First, we have to look at the assumptions made by theory X. They assume the average person:
• .Dislikes work and attempts to avoid it.
• Has no ambition, wants no responsibility, and would rather follow than lead.
• Is self-centered and therefore does not care about organizational goals.
• Resists change.
• Is gullible and not particularly intelligent.
Theory X is a more demanding and strict form of management. They belive that people only work for security and money.(http://www.netmba.com/mgmt/ob/motivation/mcgregor/) According to Douglas McGregor, the author of "The Human Side of Enterprise",(http://www.accel-team.com/human_relations/hrels_03_mcgregor.html) modern forms of management are derived from, old time, Military ranks and that of the Catholic Church. McGregor described the X Theory as an attempt to manage people by motivating them through, in older times, physical force and power, and now through moral authority along with monetary compensation. The X theory is more of an authoritarian rule than a helpful motivator, like theory Y. (Radio/television/cable management third edition, Pg 23)

The only manager that describes the actions assumed by the X theory was my manager at Target. She didn't use any form of positive incentive to encourage her employees to work hard and trust her decisions.
