The key messages in the book The Five Dysfunctions of a Team are that working in an effective team will produce an effective outcome. It also demonstrates the obstacles that keep the most talented teams from reaching their potential. In addition, the book mentions that a true measure of a team is that it accomplishes the results that it sets out to achieve. To do that on a ongoing basis, a team must overcome the five dysfunctions by embodying the behaviors described for each one. The five dysfunctions discussed are inattention to results, avoidance of accountability, lack of commitment, fear of conflict, and absence of trust.
I have developed trust at my current job by working as a team. I am a program manager in a medical communications company and my coworkers and I work closely to manage logistics and content development in several medical education programs. We all trust one another and work together as a team. We all have a goal which is to service our clients with top level service and to achieve a flawless and successful program. We all are required to pitch in and work together to achieve our central goal to accomplish success. If one team member fails we all fail as a team and the company’s reputation is damaged.
I have also developed trust in many of my marketing courses I have taken at Rutgers. Most of my classes require us to work in groups. We are to all trust one another that we will all contribute to our group equally. We have to trust each member in the team will complete there tasks and deliver results.
The author states that absence of trust leads to fear of conflict and lack of commitment. She states this because if everyone doesn’t trust one another, then the team will not engage in open, constructive, ideological conflict. And thus, continue to hold a sense of artificial harmony.
